Guadalupe, San José

Located just outside the bustling metropolis of Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose, the suburb of Guadalupe is easily accessible by car or public transportation. Travelers seeking an urban experience in Costa Rica may enjoy the more laid-back environment of Guadalupe within a convenient location near the amenities and attractions of downtown San Jose. Within minutes, travelers can walk to local shops, restaurants and bars, and because of major transportation outlets, they can reach nearby national parks and reserves easily. In less than an hour, travelers can reach the Irazú Volcano in Cartago, or in just over a half hour visitors can be in the massive Braulio Carrillo National Park.

Looming over Cartago, Irazú Volcano is the country's largest and highest active volcano. A major eruption hasn't taken place since March 19, 1963, although the surrounding land is pleasantly affected by the volcanic action. The stunning yellow-green waters of the lake at Diego de la Haya Crater are caused by rainfall that dissolves the minerals along the crater walls, but this lake isn't suitable for swimming.

Visitors of Guadalupe who are looking for a lush tropical rainforest may prefer Braulio Carrillo National Park, which sits between Irazu and the Poas Volcano. Spanning 108,970 acres of rolling hills, this park is lush with diverse flora and fauna and at least five different life zones. From humid, lowland jungles to chilly cloud forests that reach an altitude of nearly 9,500 feet, Braulio is incredibly diverse.

Home to 150 mammals, 6,000 species of plants and miles of trails with varying elevation, Braulio is one of the most magnificent parks in Costa Rica. Visitors can trek to the stunning San Fernando waterfall and the Barva Volcano, an inactive volcano that reaches the highest peak in the park.

Within minutes, travelers will be in the most metropolitan city in Costa Rica. San Jose, called Chepe by local Ticos, is home to outstanding preserved architecture, the world's largest college of American jade at the Jade Museum, and contemporary art works at TEOR/eTica, which is a nonprofit housed in a vintage mansion.

The city of Guadalupe is near countless attractions and recreational opportunities throughout the entire metropolitan area of San Jose. Travelers looking for exciting nightlife, unparalleled coffee shops and exquisite dining options in a city setting should look no further than Guadalupe.
