Driving
Visitors will be happy to find that the roads in Limon are well maintained and easy to travel on. This opens up the opportunity for tourists to drive themselves into the province. The traffic is mild, so there isn’t too much stress even though you’re driving in an unfamiliar area. Limon province is only a two and a half hour drive from the city of San José, so it is easy to travel from one stop in Costa Rica to the next. The drive from San Jose is a scenic route along highway 32, past the towns of Guapiles, Guacimo and Siquirres.
Boats and Ships
Puerto Limon is an important port in the area, so it’s easy for travelers to find passage on a cruise ship. There are certain areas in Limon that you might want to travel to, like the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge or the Tortuguero National Park, that are wild and swampy and don’t offer properly maintained roads for traveling. To get to these areas, visitors can take a boat ride upriver from Moin, which is just north of Puerto Limon. This is a popular for tourists, and recommended.
Flying
Flying is another option if you want to visit the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge or the Tortuguero National Park areas. From San Jose, using the Juan Santamaria International Airport, you can find a domestic flight on the Sansa or Nature Air airlines. Both of these airlines offer domestic flights on a daily basis, so you should be able to find what you need for your schedule.
Getting Around in Limón
No matter how you get to Limon province, you’ll also need to think about how you are going to get around once you are there. There are plenty of options to suit any group of people – from big to small – and any budget.
One option for traveling around Limon is to use taxi cabs. Cab are readily available around the city, and you should be able to find one easy enough. Just check with the driver before you get in the cab to make sure that they know how to get to your next stop.

Another common form of travel within Limon is a public bus. Buses are the easiest and cheapest way to get around, and believe it or not they are comfortable! Buses leave regularly from Puerto Limon to Cahuita, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Bribri, Sixaola and Manzanillo.
There are also rental cars available if you want to have more control over your transportation. Just make sure that all the places you want to go to are accessible by car. You’ll also see scooters and bicycles used a lot in Limon – consider using this method of travel is you are going to be exploring locally.
