Spacious bungalows and wildlife encounters await at the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero, a remote 3-star hotel in the rainforest of Costa Rica’s scenic Limón region.

Overview

Just 2 miles away from Tortuguero National Park, or about a 5-minutes’ journey lies a charming and cozy destination for jungle explorers known as the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero.

Also sometimes called the Aninga Hotel and Spa – Tortuguero, the property has lush foliage everywhere you look. It features a patio with lounge chairs surrounded by a large heart-shaped pool and a separate kiddie pool.

You can enjoy a tasty meal of authentic Costa Rican cuisine at the onsite restaurant, or have a few drinks at the bar.

But to me, a great adventure starts with a special location, and that is exactly what makes the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero stand out!

A Secluded Jungle Location

The lodge is nicely tucked away in nature-centric Tortuguero. It’s named after the sea turtles that come up on its shores to nest.

It’s surrounded on all sides by jungle, beaches, and canals, making it a paradise for both nature lovers and animal enthusiasts. It’s Caribbean North (w. Tortuguero) location of the Limón region provides a stunning backdrop to any Costa Rica vacation.

The Journey to the Lodge

International travelers can reach the lodge by flying into San José International Airport (SJO), which is 137.5 kilometers (85.5 miles) from the hotel, and then taking a connecting flight to Tortuguero Domestic Airport.

Alternatively, the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero offers a bus service from SJO. As it’s located along a canal, you’ll need to hop on a boat to reach the Aninga Lodge, but the voyage is well worth the sense of seclusion you can’t get anywhere else.

It’s All About Experiences

The hotel takes advantage of its excellent location to offer an unparalleled experience!

You can admire the jungle from your hotel’s bungalow, or take one of the hotel’s many tours led by a local guide. These tours include walks through Tortuguero village, Tortuguero National Park, the jungle canopy, and a nighttime walking tour, as well as tours by boat. You can even book a fishing or turtle tour through the hotel.

The Perfect Amenities

If you’re looking for a uniquely relaxing experience, I suggest that you book a massage or hot stone treatment at the Aninga Lodge’s spa, which will be an experience with a view right on the shore of the main canal.

Other amenities offered at the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero include free WiFi, a garden, walking paths, and complimentary breakfast.

The Aninga Lodge Tortuguero is made up of over 30 large rooms in a bungalow style. These rooms offer privacy and comfort in the depths of one of Costa Rica’s most naturally beautiful regions.

I can say that the design and décor is updated and stylish. In terms of style, think wood or tile floors, showers with glass doors, tile walls and even chandeliers in the bathrooms.

Bungalows

Each bungalow at the lodge is designed to offer optimal comfort and convenience. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy the solitude of having your own cabin surrounded by wilderness on all sides.

Nearly all features on the property, including rooms and walking trails, are lifted off the ground on stilts. Not only can guests experience panoramic views of the surrounding jungle, but this construction style also causes less disruption to the environment.

It’s just one part of the Angina Lodge’s eco-friendly practices, which also include a water treatment plan to prevent contamination of the region’s beautiful canals and beaches.

Bungalows are spacious with plenty of room to stretch out on the plush beds after a long day of hiking in the jungle, or to quickly rest and refresh in between activities throughout the day. They contain between one to three double-size beds so you can customize your reservation to fit your group size.

The point is that you could plan any type of trip here from an idyllic solitary retreat or scenic couples’ getaway to a family gathering for some fun in the sun.

The jungle climate is comfortably warm year-round, but if you’re looking to cool down, all rooms are equipped with ceiling fans. Bungalows also have their own private bathrooms with hot water showers.

Activities

Tortuguero is the epitome of a classic jungle environment, with towering rainforests and a network of scenic canals winding through the area.

If you’re planning to stay at the Aninga Lodge Tortuguero, you’ll likely want to spend the bulk of your time exploring this natural playground teeming with plantlife and exotic animals.

Nearby activities highlight the region’s best features, including its wildlife and friendly locals.

Experience the Nesting Season for the Green Sea Turtles

Green sea turtles are an endangered species that are native to very few regions on Earth. As a result, having a chance to see their nesting season for yourself is an opportunity you won’t want to pass up if you visit Tortuguero, as it’s a known nesting site.

The beaches used by turtles are protected and unauthorized access is illegal, so you’ll need to book a tour with an approved guide to access them. This is to protect the turtles and ensure there is as little human interference as possible.

If you want a chance to see this highly elusive species in an unforgettable way, plan your visit to coincide with nesting season. However, keep in mind that this is the busiest season for Tortuguero, so it’s a good idea to book your tour well in advance.

Visit the Town of Tortuguero

Tortuguero’s namesake town is one of the liveliest areas in the region, filled with locals and a plethora of shops and restaurants. Visiting the town is a great way to immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture, learn from Ticos, and experience all the benefits of traveling to a foreign country.

Tortuguero’s shops are stocked with handcrafted decorations and unique items that make for excellent souvenirs and gifts. You can also dine at various restaurants to taste some of Costa Rica’s most popular dishes, such as a few of my personal favorites, casado and fried plantains.

I suggest you plan a detour into town to refresh between excursions into the jungle, or plan an evening trip for dinner and entertainment.

Take the Tortuguero Canals Boat Tour

Given Aninga Lodge’s location right on Tortuguero’s canals, taking a tour of these waterways by boat is a no-brainer, especially if you want to get a better look at the scenery and wildlife. The Tortuguero-Canals-Tour/d4513-33709P1?pid=P00039067&mcid=42383&medium=link" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Tortuguero Canals Boat Tour brings the flora and fauna of the jungle to the forefront as you traverse the canals.

Canal tours also offer some of the best birdwatching in the region, especially in the early mornings. Be sure to bring a camera and a pair of binoculars, as you’re almost certain to see plenty of wildlife.

From brightly colored tropical birds to native species of monkeys and reptiles, this 4-hour tour comes with many opportunities for seeing Costa Rica’s native species and admiring its biodiversity.
