Located in the former Atlantic Railway Station in the capital city of San Jose, the Museum of Forms, Space and Sound opened in April 2002 as a non-profit program of the Costa Rican Art Museum.
The museum is designed to offer the public, particularly children and youth, an interactive, educational and recreational facility. Additionally, the Museo de Formas, Espacios y Sonidos strives to bring awareness to the historical significance of the old train station, as well as the former railway's economic importance.
The 1871 Atlantic Railway Station once served as a bustling center for passengers leaving and arriving on trains to and from the country's province of Limon.
In addition to the museum's unique historical setting, the rooms contain a number of historical and contemporary art exhibits.
The Museum of Forms, Space and Sound is dedicated to the fields of plastic arts, architecture and sounds, with a room for each of these specific themes.
n the Forms room of the museum, visitors can find a variety of wood and stone sculptures from various time periods throughout Costa Rican history. These sculptures depict a number of different figures and are an important aspect of the country's cultural heritage.
Located in the Space room of the Museum of Forms, Space and Sound is a collection of scale models of buildings and the ruins of Ujarras, a town located in the country's province of Cartago.
In the Sounds room, visitors can expect to find an impressive collection of musical instruments on display. Travelers can enjoy the use of these various instruments, including a xylophone.
Finally, perhaps the most important exhibit than can be found in the Museum of Forms, Space and Sound is the collection that relates to the history of Costa Rican railways, including the Atlantic station.
This collection features a Locomotive 59, which was a 1939 steam locomotive imported from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Additionally, tourists can find a bust honoring Tomas Guardia, who initially launched the construction of the country's railroad.
The Museum of Forms, Space and Sound is free to children, students and seniors and is open during the week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
