Costa Rica is a place for relaxation, and many travelers enjoy sipping on a cocktail or cold brew after a long day in the sun here. Locals like to indulge, but don't expect to see people who are intoxicated and obnoxious in bars. Rather, local watering holes are a place to sit back and take in the scenery. Whatever kind of mood while you're on vacation in Costa Rica, it won't be difficult to find a place to unwind.
Beachside Taverns
Quaint beachside taverns have a laid-back attitude and a throw-caution-to-the-wind environment. These smaller establishments are often open-air, and sometimes will boast beautiful views of the ocean, forest or mountains. Patrons don't need to get dressed up to enjoy these types of places - many visitors come in straight from the beach or rainforest wearing their bathing suit or hiking boots. These smaller bars are great for the no-frills traveler.
Clubs
With a large density of dance clubs and discos in San Jose, many people who want to party and have a great time will venture through hot spots here. However, Jaco is another place to enjoy a cocktail and dance the night away. Jaco is known as a party town for many travelers, so young people looking for a great time will love this area.
In Costa Rica, there are plenty of places to go dancing. Salsa, meringue, reggaeton, cumbia and more are popular for local dance enthusiasts. Travelers can try their hand at dancing or take a few lessons to blend in with the crowd here.
Resort Lounges
Since Costa Rica welcomes visitors throughout the year all across the country, there are many resort lounges and hotel bars that are popular for travelers. These spots are great because they do not require guests to leave the premise, but unfortunately the prices for beverages are often higher because of the convenience.
Choose Bars by Region
Going out in Costa Rica
Costa Ricans typically go out on Fridays and Saturdays, or when bars offer deals or discount nights. Travelers who are not on a work schedule will be able to find places to go out virtually every day, and some bars stay open until 4 a.m. Generally, bars and clubs get crowded around 10 or 11 p.m. However, make sure to check out the open and close times for the bars you venture to because they may vary.
Alcohol
If you are a die-hard vino enthusiast, chances are Costa Rica is not the best place to indulge. Since the climate is not ideal for grape growing, wine is not very popular here. However, there are several brands of local beer that can quench thirst. Imperial, Bavaria, Rock Ice and Pilsen are the most popular, and Heineken is served in most establishments in the country. Depending on the type of bar, a beer will cost $3.00 USD to $6.00 USD.
